This past March, I posted a blog about a series of books about a cat named Chester who comes to visit the library and ends up learning what to do in a library, book care, and the types of books that can be found inside the library.
I originally purchased these three books from Scholastic, but I’ve come to learn that the books are not available ANYWHERE. (Believe me, I’ve searched for the last few months trying to find a place to purchase them for other librarians, but have had no luck.) I know how frustrating it can be when you see an idea you’d like to try but then can’t find the materials that go along with it. So, I decided to find an alternative book that you can use with 1st grade and still do the same type of class book activity.
While there are many different books out there that you can use such as I Took My Frog to the Library by Eric Kimmel or The Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy, I really liked the book Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen.
In the book, the librarian, Mrs. Merriweather, often refers to the rules in the library. This can be used to open a discussion with your students, and have them brainstorm what they think is important to remember when coming to the library. This can then lead into a discussion about how to take care of their library books.
To help review this information, I created an activity where the students can help you create a class book. There are 10 pages with 2 parts on each page (this will give you 20 options to illustrate) If you have more than 20 students, I also included a blank version where students can write and illustrate their own examples.
I also added in a cut and paste review of 10 things you SHOULD do with your library books and 10 things you SHOULD NOT do with your library books (which reviews the activity we did back when they were in Kindergarten. You can read more about that activity here.)
