Storybook Pumpkin Patch

I first heard about a Storybook Pumpkin Patch from Cari Young on her blog The Centered School Library.  I thought this would be a fun way to celebrate books, and possibly start a new tradition at our school as well.

I sent home a letter in mid-October to give the kids plenty of time to find a pumpkin, select a storybook character, and create their masterpiece.

I had them bring in their pumpkins the week before Halloween, and I set them up according to grade level.  I had found these cute felt pumpkins in the dollar aisle at Target, and simply taped my signed onto them and used a book stand to hold them up.

On Friday, I invited teachers to stop by after school to vote for their favorite and most creative pumpkin in each grade level.

Everyone who participated received a cool Halloween pencil as a way of saying “Thanks!”, and the winners received a $5.00 coupon to go shopping at our Fall Book Fair in November.

Here were the winners in each grade level for this year:

Pre-K = Curious George
prek
Kinder = Rainbow Fish
Kinder
1st Grade: Mrs. Potts
1st
2nd Grade: Yoda

2nd

3rd Grade: Kitty Soft Paws

4th Grade: Cinderella’s Carriage

5th Grade = A tie between Johnny Appleseed and The Tin Man

The kids had a BLAST, and were amazingly creative with their storybook characters.  Here’s our video that I created highlighting all the creativity at our school. I’ll use this video to show my students next year!

If you haven’t done your own Storybook Pumpkin Patch, I DEFINITELY recommend doing it next year.  To make it easier, you can download all these forms at my TpT store and get started right away!

I had a pumpkin patch in my library for the first time this year. Will definitely do it again next year!! I didn't offer it as a contest, rather just an opportunity to be creative. Maybe next year it will be a contest.

Wow, Sandy! I've always though of you as a rock star librarian, and after checking out your blog, your rock star status shot through the roof! I'm so impressed with all the cool stuff you are doing in your library!
